‘Sleep Well, Live Better’: Why World Sleep Day reminds us that rest is so essential to our overall health and wellbeing

Last Friday, (13th March) marked World Sleep Day, a global awareness event led by the World Sleep Society to remind everyone of one simple yet often overlooked principle: sleep being essential to health and wellness. The theme for this year, ‘Sleep Well, Live Better’, reflects a continuously growing body of scientific research highlighting that quality sleep is just as important to our wellbeing as nutrition and physical activity. In other words, if we want to perform at our best during the day, we need to prioritise how we rest at night. This year, there were three key messages for us to consider:

1. Sleep being a ‘pillar’ of health, alongside nutrition and exercise

Sleep is far more than our bodies simply ‘switching off’ for the night. There are many significant benefits to a good night’s rest, including:

  • the support of enhanced memory, learning and creativity;
  • the strengthening of our immune systems, helping the body to fight bacteria and viruses;
  • helping us to process food more effectively and efficiently, better enabling us to maintain healthier weight and blood sugar levels;
  • helping to clear and remove waste from our brains, enhancing long-term brain health;
  • helping to repair tired muscles and recycle damaged cells, thereby allowing for faster physical recovery.

When sleep quality or quantity deteriorates, the effects can ripple across almost every aspect of our lives. Studies link poor sleep to increased risks of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, impaired memories and reduced immune function. Put simply: sleep is one of the most powerful tools we have for protecting our health but it is also one of the easiest to overlook.

2. Sleep health is about more than just the hours

Healthy sleep is multidimensional. It’s not just about how long we sleep, it’s also about how well we sleep, with sleep experts highlighting a number of dimensions to sleep health:

  • Duration – how much sleep we get each night (ideally 7+ hours);
  • Efficiency – how quickly and easily we fall asleep each night and our ability to stay rested until the morning;
  • Timing – when we sleep within our 24-hour body cycles;
  • Regularity – ensuring that we follow consistent bedtimes and wake times across all 7 days of the week;

Which enhances:

  • Alertness – how focused we feel over the course of the day and whether we start to feel sleep or drowsy mid-afternoon;
  • Quality - how rested, energised and satisfied we feel when we wake up each day.

 3. Creating the right environment for you to sleep at your best

Other simple steps that can improve your sleep health include:

  • reducing light exposure before bed (especially phone screens);
  • maintaining a cool bedroom temperature;
  • minimising disruptive noise;
  • creating a relaxing night-time routine.

Above all, the goal is to create an environment where you can fully relax in the lead-up to bedtime.
